The scientific Method and Automobile Repair

About my Book:

The Scientific Method and Automobile Repair takes you on a journey through time and space to meet some of the amazing people, from Archimedes to Darwin, who have contributed to how modern science has changed our daily lives and the way we look at the world.

Although you will encounter some fascinating scientific facts in The scientific Method and Automobile Repair, it is not about what we know. Rather it is about how we know what we know. Its purpose is to tell the story of how scientists have arrived at the fact and theories that comprise the body of knowledge we think of as science today. And in telling those stories to illustrate how science is done today and how and where that process came from in time and space.

In order to tell that story the reader will go on a journey through time reaching back 6000 years to the beginnings of technology, mathematics and scientific thought that provided the foundations for Modern Science.

On this journey we will visit China, India, the Middle East, Africa and Europe and meet some of the remarkable people who contributed to the beginnings of science and to a new way of looking at the world that shook the old world to its roots.

We will examine the mathematics of ancient India that allowed Newton and Leibniz to invent calculus, the technology of ancient China and Africa that laid the foundations for scientific progress in paper making, printing, medicine and more.  Finally we will meet some of the thinkers of Ancient Greece and 9th century Islam who provided the ideas for the Renaissance men and women of Europe who changed our world.

The result is the global civilization we live in today that exists as it does because of modern science and technology.  Each chapter will explain a different aspect of how science works from Experimental method and measurement to what a scientific theory is to how the culture of science guides scientists as they work in teams around the world today.   These ideas are illustrated first with stories from the past and then with how Archie the Mechanic uses the same concepts to fix his antique cars and finally with how scientists today use this particular scientific process to work on answers to present-day big questions in science.

This is a book for everyone whose life is impacted by science and technology and who needs a better understanding of what Science is and is not in order to participate effectively in society.  It will be especially valuable for teachers and students of science as we often study and teach scientific subjects without a clear understanding of what science is and what the rules for doing science are.  But it is also an effort to make all of us Citizen Scientists who have a deeper understanding of how science impacts our lives and what it can and cannot do so we may effectively participate in decisions about how to use the tools of science for good.
